Urlbox alternative

Urlbox alternatives for teams that need monitoring, not just renders

Urlbox is an excellent rendering engine. It is not a monitoring product: there is no native scheduler, no change detection, and no managed archive. It also has no ordered multi-step sequence, so any page that needs a form filled and submitted before capture is out of reach.

So the $585/month pricing is the floor, before the Zapier plan, proxy subscription for real location captures, and before the cron service and diffing routine you end up maintaining. PagePixels charges $59.99 for 30,000 captures, and schedules them, stores them, compares each one to the last, and tells you when a page changed. These features are included in every plan, including the Free plan.

Urlbox pricing verified 27 July 2026 against urlbox.com/pricing.

500 pages, twice daily = 30,000 captures / mo
Urlbox
$585.00

$495 base + 30 × $3 per 1,000 = $585.00 / mo

PagePixels
$59.99

30,000 tier, flat, scheduler included = $59.99 / mo

Difference: $525.01 / mo. 9.8x. $6,300.12 a year.
And the $585 does not include the proxy subscription that country-accurate capture requires, or the Zapier plan sized for 30,000 monthly tasks, or the cron service you build instead.
01 / The structural difference

Urlbox renders. It does not watch.

Urlbox is a rendering engine. Eleven output formats, four DOM-event wait modes, direct delivery to S3, R2, and GCS. If your problem is turning a URL into a high-fidelity artifact, they solve it well. What they do not build is the layer above the render: the scheduler that fires it, the diff that tells you something moved, the archive that holds every version. Whether that ends before or after your problem is the whole question on this page.

Recurring capture

No native scheduler

Their own automation documentation routes scheduled screenshots through Zapier's schedule zap, or your own cron. PagePixels schedules natively from every five minutes to once a year, on every plan.

Knowing what moved

No change detection

Their own content states Urlbox cannot analyse the screenshot for change comparison. PagePixels compares each capture to the previous one and posts to Slack, Zapier, or a webhook.

Getting to the page

No ordered action sequence

Thirteen action types run in the order you list them: log in, fill the form, choose the dropdown, click through, wait for the element, then capture. Nothing on their site lists an equivalent ordered sequence.

History

No managed archive

Renders land in your own S3, R2, or GCS bucket, which is better if you want the bytes in your data lake and worse if you wanted retention and retrieval handled for you.

02 / Feature gating

What custom JavaScript and true rendering costs

Urlbox gates individual render options behind plan tiers.

Custom JavaScript

Urlbox
$99 /mo
PagePixels
$0

The js option requires Ultra. Included on every PagePixels plan, free included.

Custom request headers

Urlbox
$49 /mo
PagePixels
$0

The header option requires Hi-Fi. Included on every PagePixels plan, free included.

Country-accurate capture

Urlbox
$99 /mo
PagePixels
$0

The proxy option requires Ultra, plus a proxy you supply and pay for. 150+ locations here, every plan.

Capability Urlbox required tier Urlbox price PagePixels
Custom JavaScript (js) Ultra $99 / mo Every plan, including free
Proxy (proxy) Ultra $99 / mo Not needed. 150+ capture locations, every plan
Custom request headers (header) Hi-Fi $49 / mo Every plan, including free

$19 versus $16.99 is not a like-for-like comparison

Urlbox describes their own Lo-Fi tier as thumbnails and low-quality third-party screenshots. It covers 2,000 renders against our 3,000, and it excludes stealth mode, custom headers, proxies, and custom JavaScript.

There is no low-fidelity tier here. Every plan, free included, captures at full resolution with 2x retina scaling, JPEG, PNG, WebP, and PDF output, and full-page capture. Every plan also runs the complete multi-step sequence: log in, fill the form, select the dropdown, click through, wait for the element, then capture. That is the whole product at $16.99, not a preview of it.

Reaching a comparable feature set on Urlbox means Ultra at $99, which is 5.8x our entry price for 5x the renders, and still no scheduler, no change detection, and no multi-step sequence. The headline numbers are close. The products at those numbers are not.

Logarithmic scale, so the vertical gap understates the dollar gap at the top of the chart. The two lines are plotted from 25 renders, including the point where they nearly touch, rather than starting where the difference flatters us.

05 / Agents

Both of us ship an MCP server. Here is what each one can do.

Urlbox ships an official MCP server, urlbox/urlbox-mcp-server run locally with npx @urlbox/screenshot-mcp and configured with an API secret pasted into your client config. It exposes one tool, render.

PagePixels ships a hosted remote server at mcp.pagepixels.com/mcp with OAuth via Dynamic Client Registration, so there is no key to paste. It exposes roughly fifteen tools covering instant capture, scheduled config create, update, delete and list, archive queries, change notification history, Real Locations, and AI analysis.

An agent on Urlbox can take a picture. An agent on PagePixels can set up ongoing monitoring, come back later, and ask what changed.

06 / Geography

Real capture locations versus coordinate emulation

This distinction gets flattened in most comparison pages and it is worth stating precisely, because the two things solve different problems and only one of them is free.

What Urlbox does

The latitude, longitude, and accuracy options emulate the browser Geolocation API. That changes what the page's JavaScript believes your coordinates are. It does not change the IP address the site sees. Country-accurate capture means the proxy option, which requires Ultra at $99 and a proxy address you supply and pay for separately.

What PagePixels does

150+ genuine capture locations, covering countries, US states, and major cities, on every plan including free. The request egresses from the region you name, so geo-priced offers, localised search results, and regional consent walls render the way a real visitor there sees them. There is no proxy to source.

07 / Total cost

What you would have to build

Urlbox gives you a render endpoint. Everything between that endpoint and a working monitoring system is yours to assemble and then to keep running.

  1. A cron service

Or a Zapier plan with a task quota sized to your render volume. Plus retries and a queue when a run overlaps the next one.

  2. An image store

With a retention lifecycle, so the bucket does not grow without limit and old captures expire on a policy you decide.

  3. A diffing routine

Something that compares this capture to the last one and decides whether the difference is worth anyone's attention.

  4. An alerting path

Slack, email, or a webhook, with deduplication so one changed page does not send forty notifications.

  5. A proxy provider

Sourced and paid for separately, if any of your captures need to look like they came from a specific country.

In fairness, plenty of Urlbox customers own that layer deliberately and it works fine for them. If capture is one input into a larger pipeline you already run, buying only the renderer is a reasonable call, and the assembly cost is one you were going to pay anyway.

08 / The other side

When Urlbox is the better choice

If you need output formats we do not have

Eleven of them, including MP4 and WEBM video, SVG, Markdown extraction, and structured JSON. If your product needs a scrolling video capture or Markdown of a rendered page, we have no substitute and will not pretend otherwise.

If you need the bytes in your own bucket

Direct delivery to S3, Cloudflare R2, and Google Cloud is first-class on their side. For a team piping renders into their own data lake, that is meaningfully better than a webhook.

The buyer who should choose them

A team building their own monitoring or capture product on top of a rendering API, who wants maximum per-render control, direct object-store delivery, and a contractual SLA, and who intends to own the scheduling, storage, and diffing layer deliberately.

09 / Migration

Moving from Urlbox to PagePixels

Your render option set maps onto a capture config almost one to one: viewport, full page, waits, selectors, custom JavaScript. Create configs individually, or in bulk through the API or MCP.

Honest note: if your pipeline depends on direct delivery into your own S3 or R2 bucket, or on MP4, SVG, or Markdown output, that part does not port. Check it before you plan the move, not after.

  1. Map your render option set onto a capture config: viewport, full page, waits, selectors, custom JavaScript. Most options carry over by name.
  2. Create the configs, individually in the app or in bulk through the API or the MCP server.
  3. Set the schedule on each config, then delete the cron job or Zapier zap that was driving it.
  4. Point change notifications at Slack or a webhook, so you find out when a page moves instead of going to look.
  5. Keep Urlbox running in parallel for a week and compare outputs before you cancel anything.
10 / FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is PagePixels cheaper than Urlbox?

At every published volume. At 2,000 renders we are $16.99 against $19, and we include 3,000. At 5,000 we are $29.99 against $49. At 10,000 we are $29.99 against $99. At 15,000 we are $49.99 against $99. At 30,000 we are $59.99 against $585. The 3,001 to 5,000 band used to be theirs by 99 cents and is now ours by $19.01.

Does Urlbox have a scheduler?

Not a native one. They market scheduled screenshots as a use case and their own documentation routes it through Zapier's schedule zap, or your own cron. PagePixels schedules recurring capture natively on every plan including free.

Can Urlbox screenshot a page behind a login?

Not through an ordered sequence of steps. Urlbox offers individual pre-render options, a click, a hover, a scroll, a wait, plus cookie and authorization headers, all applied to one render. There is no way to express fill the email field, then the password field, then submit, then wait for the dashboard, then open the billing tab, then capture. PagePixels runs 13 action types in the order you list them, which is what most gated pages actually require.

Does Urlbox do change detection?

No. Their own content states that Urlbox cannot analyse the screenshot by itself for change comparison. If you want to know when a page changed, you build the diffing and alerting yourself. PagePixels compares each capture to the previous one and notifies Slack, Zapier, or a webhook.

Urlbox has an MCP server too. What is different about yours?

Correct, they ship an official one. Theirs is a local stdio package run with npx @urlbox/screenshot-mcp, configured by pasting an API secret, and it exposes one tool, render. Ours is a hosted remote server at mcp.pagepixels.com/mcp with OAuth sign-in and no key to paste, exposing about fifteen tools including scheduled config management, archive queries, and change notification history.

Does Urlbox support geolocation?

Two different things, and the distinction matters. Their latitude and longitude options emulate the browser Geolocation API, which changes what the page's JavaScript thinks your coordinates are but not the IP address the site sees. Country-accurate capture means their proxy option, which requires the $99 Ultra plan and a proxy you supply and pay for. PagePixels captures from 150+ real locations on every plan.

Urlbox is $19 and PagePixels is $16.99. That is basically the same, isn't it?

The headline is close and the products at that price are not. Urlbox describes Lo-Fi themselves as thumbnails and low-quality third-party screenshots. It covers 2,000 renders against our 3,000, and it excludes stealth mode, custom headers, proxies, and custom JavaScript. A comparable feature set on Urlbox is Ultra at $99, which is 5.8x our entry price for 5x the renders, still with no scheduler and no change detection.

What does custom JavaScript cost?

On Urlbox, the js option requires the Ultra plan at $99 a month, and custom request headers require Hi-Fi at $49. On PagePixels both are included on every plan, including free.

Do you publish an SLA or a concurrency limit?

No. Urlbox does: SLAs and security review on Business, an 8-hour first response, and 1,000 requests per minute. If your procurement requires those, that is a genuine gap on our side and it is an Enterprise conversation with us, not a self-serve one.

Can I just schedule captures myself with a cron job?

Many Urlbox customers do and it works. What you are signing up for is a cron service, a queue, retry handling, a storage lifecycle, a diffing routine, and alerting, which is a few weeks of engineering and then permanent maintenance on a component that tends to fail quietly. If your team wants to own that layer deliberately, Urlbox is a reasonable choice.
