How to take automatic screenshots of weather forecast information from the WMO World Weather Information Service website

Learn how to automate scheduled screenshots of current weather reports using WMO's weather service website and PagePixels.

Introduction

PagePixels is a screenshot automation tool that you can use to take scheduled screenshots of web pages, including the latest weather forecast information on World Meteorological Organization's (aka WMO) World Weather Information Service website.

PagePixels is free to start, and this tutorial demonstrates how to automatically capture daily screenshots of the main weather report section of a World Weather Information Service web page.

Prerequisites

Before you start, you'll need:

  • A PagePixels account.
  • A link to a WMO weather information page for the location that interests you.
    • For example, the following link shows the current weather forecast for Auckland, New Zealand:
      https://worldweather.wmo.int/en/city.html?cityId=538

How to automate screenshots of WMO current weather reports

To capture daily automatic screenshots of the weather forecast section of a World Weather Information Service page:

1

Create a screenshot

Log in to your PagePixels account, and click the +Create Screenshot button.

2

Set your schedule

By default, scheduled screenshots are taken every 5 minutes.

For a daily screenshot, update the fields to: 1 Days

3

Add URL

Copy and paste the link to a WMO weather report page into the Website URL to Capture field.

For example:

https://worldweather.wmo.int/en/city.html?cityId=538
4

Add CSS Selector (Optional)

PagePixels CSS Selector option helps you capture a specific element on a web page.

In this case - to screenshot only the main weather forecast information on WMO's website, you can use the CSS Selector:

body > div.wrapper > div:nth-child(7)
5

Increase Wait Time

Scroll to the Waiting section.

Change the Time to wait value from 1500 (default) to: 8000

This will give the page more time to load before taking the screenshot. Max is 20000 (unless you have the 5-minute Timeout Addon).

6

Check Incremental Scroll

Tick the Incremental Scroll option.

This option encourages content to load that requires a user to scroll the page (i.e. lazy-loaded content).

7

Save Screenshot

Click the green Save Screenshot button (top-right).

Your screenshot automation is officially set, and your first weather report screenshot will be taken shortly.
